Giving you the skinny on health, fitness, beauty & gossip...one post at a time
About Me
Hi all! My name is Carrie and I am the author of TheSkinnyBuzz. I am a graduate of James Madison University with a degree in public relations and writing. After college, I re-located to Washington,
D.C. where I became a PR pro for an agency right outside the city. Recently I moved to the Triangle area of North Carolina and am absolutely loving it! (GO TARHEELS!) Now I do PR in Raleigh and blog
on the side. As for my healthy side, I've served as a JMU cheerleader, group fitness instructor, fitness and wellness program facilitator and presenter at fitness conferences. I have also worked at a
PR agency in New York City that specialized in entertainment, specifically lifestyle, beauty and fitness. I am also a fashion editor for The Examiner - check out my page here:
http://www.examiner.com/x-31308-Durham-Fashion-Examiner. All in all, I love all things fashion, beauty, health & fitness and enjoy sharing my passions with you!

Very well said. There is just no way to rationalize her two different stances on diet pills without coming up with the realization that her detox is just a cash grab. I agree with you that this much retouching in no way could make young women feel good about themselves. What really upset me though, was when Lucy admitted to retouching her own photos after she ran a marathon! I think that if you can complete such a demanding physical feat, you should be proud of your body. I think this is just indicative of society's obsession with the image of the "perfect" woman. I'm an avid reader of the magazine myself, and I would be lying if I said I didn't second guess my own shape and size after seeing some of the models. Good commentary on your part! Reply to this

I'm glad to shed awareness on this topic - It's even a new term for me, but clearly can be more serious and more prevalent than ano. I will def. do more posts like this from now on.
I did not put two and two together! I did happen to catch your interview and it definitely hit home. It feels good to hear that other people have the same problem that I've had for what seems like ages. It's weird though because I went from anorexic to ortho...striving to find a balance. I thought it was better because hey, at least I was eating. But in the meantime, it became more of an obsession - it became more exhausting than not eating at all. And I know, from seeing you on RR this morning, that you know exactly what I am talking about.
But I am glad to see that you have recovered (as much as you can!) from this. Believe me, I know what it must have taken. So awesome work!!! You definitely will serve as a great model for many to come.
And I will post the interview on my blog later tonight! Reply to this

thank you for helping to shed light on this. There are many individuals who fall under the description of orthorexia but do not receive the help they need because they are not anorexic, bulimic, etc. Unfortunately orthorexia often leads to anorexia and it could have been stopped if the obsessive behaviors were caught and diagnosed early before the weight lose or medical imbalances are detected.

I too saw article & bought the magazine. I tried the diet (succesfully) at the end of May. I lost 8 lbs and have kept it off. The menus are very similar to Phase II of South Beach. Because you get healthy fats (avocados, nuts) and some whole grain carbs (brown rice, pita, tortilla) you are very satisfied. I personally divided the 300 calories for breakfast into breakfast and a morning snack.
However, I found that the key to this diet is the smoothie - I am going to add it back to my daily breakfast this week. What I learned about the smoothie - it is better cold - use ice cubes when making. If you use crushed pineapple you can substitute some extra juice for 1/2 of the honey and cut out some of the calories. I bought ginger in a jar that was already minced (like you can buy garlic) - it saved a lot of time in the morning. Finally, consistency of the smoothie was key for me - I had to blend on high speed for 2 full minutes to get it "smooth" enough to drink. It tasted fine, but I did not like the thick consistency that resulted when the parsely was not all ground up.
I have been recommending the general concepts of this diet (if not the exact recipes) to all my friends this summer. Reply to this
